A trip to the zoo where everyone left still in a decent mood

A trip to the Sedgwick County Zoo during summer is a hot, sweaty rite of passage every person in south central Kansas has experienced as a child. To perpetuate this cycle, Kansas has been doing this cool thing for the past few summers called the Sunflower Summer where you download the app and get one time free entrance to several sites, museums, state parks, etc (ya know, at least somewhat semi educational type stuff) around the state.

Yesterday we chose the zoo. Normally it can be quite the blow to your bank account and therefore you feel the need to almost kill yourself and risk your entire family's mental health staying all day to get the most bang for your buck. However, free entry allows for zero guilt when you want to leave after the temperature becomes unbearable and both kids and adults are starting to get snippy.

I know zoo pics are a little cliche but hey, the subject matter can be undeniably good and I didn't have any other projects going on at the moment. I tried to find some opportunities for more unique scenes but wasn't able to get too many:

We first went to the herpetarium and saw the familiar old tortoises (over half were born in the 1950s!):

Oldies but goodies

There appeared to be one warrior frog determined to take out a snake:

Many other bold, bright and scary creatures were seen:

The "jungle" has always been my favorite place since childhood. We saw many colorful birds (although blue definitely seemed to be a theme):

Giraffe's are one of my favorite animals and this guy was giving alllll the facial expressions while eating (or should I say he aaaate!):

Those eyes!

These two zebras were giving me some optical illusions:

There were baby elephants!!

I don't really care for primates but here are some pics for the masses;

As we were leaving we walked by the giraffes one last time and saw this centered perfection:

Total time spent at the zoo was about 2 hours and we all left with decent attitudes and no fights. Thanks Sunflower app!
