On the Texas–New Mexico border along Route 66 sits Glenrio, a town that never quite disappeared.

Jerome Arizona Mining Town — Route 66 Photography

Perched on Cleopatra Hill above the Verde Valley, Jerome began as a copper mining town in the late 1800s. When the mines closed in the 1950s the population collapsed, leaving behind a hillside of abandoned buildings, stairways, and industrial remnants overlooking the desert.
